Why is it so hard to get motivated?

Why is it so hard to get motivated?

What I really wanted to call the blog was Why is it so fucken hard to get motivated!

Is it so hard to get motivated  because when we think of exercise and diet and looking after our health we think of pain, sweat, deprivation, all or nothing get results, no pain no gain. Is it because the satisfaction of staying in bed rather than getting up early is to hard to resist? or the beckoning call of the couch after a hard day sitting in the office to much. Is it the taste and texture of that extra biscuit or the crunch of the chips as you have a wine at then end of the day that provides so much more at that exact moment rather than the long term benefits of not having the tasty treats that provide no nutritional benefit what so ever? Why is it in this day and age when we are educated, have more nutritional advice, exercise programs, gadgets, apps, 24 hour gyms, boot-camps, nutritionists, personal trainers, shakes, products, in home exercise machines the list is never ending – why is it so hard for us to get motivated to take better care of our selves?

How to get motivated: What and Why?

It’s about the what and the why and the stage of change you are currently in. I’m not diving into what we need to be doing to achieve our goals here. I’m getting into the what do you want to achieve and why is that important to you and how ready you are to get started. So I want you to grab a pen and paper and lets start digging. Write down your goal/ dream/ desire – what you want to achieve. And now lets look at these questions and see how it transforms in a goal to get you started.

What do you want to achieve?

Why do you want to achieve this?

What will it mean to you if you achieve your goal?**

How will you feel if in (3/ 6 months/ 1 year) you are in the same place as you are now?

How important out of 10 is it for you to achieve this goal?

How long have you thought about it for?

Whats stopped you from starting sooner?

What barriers can you see getting in your way of achieving this ? Or if you have been trying to achieve this what has stopped you from achieving this? (eg kids/ time/ work/ money/ willpower/ knowledge)

How can you work around those barriers?

Lets go back to the what does it mean for you to achieve this goal?** And expand on this… Can you visualize how that would feel? Can you close your eyes and see yourself here. Pay attention to the detail, the feeling, how you look, how it feels, how do you feel about yourself? How does it impact on your everyday life? Spend as long as you like on this part and acknowledge all the feeling associated with the achieving your desire and how strongly your feel. If you struggle with this part, that’s ok, it can take a little bit of trust in yourself to allow yourself to feel that you have achieved your desire and shows it’s an area you could you practice a little – it will come 🙂

Working through the initial What and Why will determine if you are ready to get started on your goal then you can start looking into how your going to achieve it! If your answers to the questions above don’t indicate to you that your desire is of high importance, that’s ok! It’s highlighting that what you want or thought you wanted isn’t the highest priority at this point in time, and you can put it aside and re visit it later – and take that stress and pressure off your self.

I hope this has helped you identify your Why and that now you are motivated to finding the best way of achieving you goals. I’m looking a posting the next blog about the Stages of Change and identifying your readiness – which goes hand in hand with finding your Why. I think this is going to turn into a series of blogs actually as this then leads to the next and the next!
